Event Description

Let's have a chat with Tom Boellstorff, (SL: Tom Bukowski)author of Coming of Age in Second Life. Dr. Boellstorff is a full time faculty in Anthropology at the University of California Irvine, Editor-in-Chief of American Anthropologist, and finishing a Handbook of Ethnographic Methods for Virtual Worlds with 3 other colleagues. We'll hear all about that with an emphasis on questions of research methodologies in virtual worlds, and more when we ask him about his new research project.

>>We will start right on time, so don't be late. Dr. Boellstorff won't be able to stay longer than our dedicated hour.

Professor Boellstorff's book Coming of Age in Second Life:
An Anthropologist Explores the Virtually Human
is now available at Amazon.com, including as a Kindle book.

Excellent event!Tom's commentary was both pithy and articulate. I would encourage researchers to go farther back than the 90's in exploring virtual community development, though. My first experience with virtual community building was back in the 80's in BBS environments reached via 300 baud modems. I went on to build one of the largest online communities within a proprietary environment before we all moved to the Internet. There has been one theme that has held true all the way from then to now ~ it is the meeting of the 'minds' that hold relationships together for a lifetime.
