Call for Proposals - AERA 2013

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

 

The American Educational Research Association's (AERA) Annual Meeting will be held Saturday, April 27 – Wednesday, May 1, 2013, in San Francisco, CA. The call for proposals opened June 1, and closes on July 22, 2012. Please refer to the AERA website for details: http://aera.net

 

The Applied Research in Virtual Environments for Learning Special Interest Group (ARVEL SIG), http://www.arvelsig.com, invites you to submit proposals for presentation at the annual 2013 conference in San Francisco. The focus for ARVEL SIG this year will align with this year’s conference theme, “Education and Poverty: Theory, Research, Policy and Praxis,” and will be on educational research topics relevant to the relationship of equity and diversity with Immersive Technologies. We are accepting papers that align with the SIG's stated goals of Applied Research or Research that supports, provides, or delivers learning and/or instruction through the use of immersive experiences/interactions that engage participants using computers/digital mediation and/or technology.

 

This call is designed to encourage the widest possible variety of papers to be submitted, while remaining focused on the underlying nature of the SIG. Proposals that discuss generic online learning, 2D learning management systems, or desktop video conferencing, for example, will be referred to another, more appropriate SIG. Papers submitted to the SIG should align with both the SIG and Conference themes. Of particular interest are proposals which address the uses of virtual worlds, games, augmented/mixed reality, and other emerging immersive technologies in learning.

 

The SIG is open to presentations that would be "alternative forms of representing scholarship." This would mean presenting empirical research at the conference by means of more than simply reading a paper, presenting slides, showing a video, or doing a demo. As the SIG seeks to support evolving immersive environments for learning, we are examining how best to leverage these environments to illustrate scholarship outside of the text-based method used in journal publications. We are open to a variety of representation forms of data collection and analysis. If you would want to be considered as an “alternate form representing scholarship,” indicate that within your submission in the area between the abstract and paper when discussing what your presentation would be.

 

For our fourth year in a row, we are also working with a journal editor to select the top 6-7 papers as reviewed by our Editorial Board for publication in a special issue in 2013.

Amy - I've been a member for a few years, but this will be my first time going to the annual conference. Can you give me some guidance on the structure for proposals? Do I apply to a division or SIG?  I've read through the RFP and it is not the easiest document to understand.  Any examples of alternative forms that fit well with virtual worlds?  I'd like to share some results of my SciEthics project.

I'm glad you'll be able to attend this year! The division/SIG question is an interesting one, and I don't have a 'pat' answer. SIGS are more narrowly focused, but are also smaller groups. We'd certainly love to have you submit for ARVEL!

 

We welcome creativity in the ways in which our group presents. It could be machinima - could be an interactive type of presentation - whatever you feel is most appropriate to showcase your project.
