What is OpenSimulator

"OpenSimulator is an open source multi-platform, multi-user 3D application server. It can be used to create a virtual environment (or world) which can be accessed through a variety of clients, on multiple protocols." source: http://opensimulator.org/wiki/Main_Page

The Grid List is a community-generated list of OpenSimulator-based virtual worlds. Many of them are free to use and welcome new users. See the list: http://opensimulator.org/wiki/Grid_List

Most of these Open-Sim worlds have their own website and public forum, however, ARVEL is interested in bringing here the discussions involving the research, methods and implementation of those worlds for teaching and learning. Rigorous research will then be archived in our Knowledge Commons on the Wiki.

Hello Ann. I still have not been able to get in. But I emailed lazuli. so i'll just be patient and wait for the help. btw, i could not see the Science Grid anymore. It was not listed in my OpenSim worlds. Do you know?
Also, thank you for the textures. I"ll put them up in the VRR at CAVE and will post some screenshots here.

I am doing my doctoral degree in Public Health. The topic of my dissertation is to teach medical students Motivational Interviewing using the Second Life Virtual World as the learning platform. In other words, motivating patients to improve their health lifestyle.

Stowa Way is currently being used as a location to replicate a small portion of my dissertation project. Once I complete my dissertation I would like to expand my work in virtual worlds. OpenSim is a nice alternative to SL.

Welcome Margaret. What is your doc program in? Do you already have a research topic in mind? What do you do at Stowa Way?

Hello,

My name is Margaret, support staff & doctoral student, from the Univ of IL at Chicago. I am new to ARVEL and hope to attend the various events in Virtual Worlds. You can find me in both SL (SL: Margaret Michalski) & 3rd Rock Grid (Margaret Dashwood). Like Ann, I do have a location (Stowa Way) in the 3rd Rock Grid.

Yes, please do have a meeting there. I would love that. I have set up a roundtable on the lower level with sit scripts in all the chairs (still necessary in OS grids), and upstairs is a casual sitting area with padded benches, which also have sit scripts. The pictures of educators and psychologists on the wall have descriptions that should show up when you mouse over them.

no not yet. but I"ll get in. I would like to visit the place and also ask you if it would be ok to host some ARVEL Roundtable discussions sometimes at Tierra Paz. I am putting the calendar of events together and ARVEL focuses on the diversity of virtual worlds. So it would be great to have some discussions hosted outside Second Life.
Jan, I have the same request for you. I"d like to schedule you to talk about your project at Ontos 2.
The purpose of those discussions is to generate exchange of ideas, solutions, problems, etc.

I'll get the photos/textures to you in the next few days. Did you ever get into the 3rd Rock Grid?

great. thanks. btw, i'd like a copy of your panoramic pictures of Tierra Paz. I"d like to show that off at the virtual reality room at ARVEL in Second Life. (so that educators familiar with Second Life can also be aware of 3rdRock Grid, ...adn also because I will be presenting ARVEL in SL at the AERA Annual Meeting in May. I'd like to show what is being done in other platforms at the same time. The only way to do so while being time conscious is to bring the panorama dsiplays to ARVEL at CAVE (Second Life)

btw, if you land in the panorama, don't worry, it's phantom, so you can walk out.
