ARVEL SIG

Applied Research in Virtual Environments for Learning

Greetings,

In preparation for the AERA conference in 2010, I am creating a virtual reality room on the ARVEL plot in SL. The VRR's purpose is to help visualize virtual worlds other than Second Life and introduce other virtual worlds than SL for research and teaching.

To create scenes from these other worlds (OpenSim, 3DXplorer, DigitalSpaces, ...), i need 6 pictures for each world. The 6 pictures should create a panoramic view of a location (4 sides, 1 sky, 1 ground). (imagine a cube used for an optical illusion)
Best format for the virtual room is 1024x1024 JPEG textures, reasonably compressed to about 200kB.

If you have a research project in a VW, please also send me an abstract of the research along your pictures. I will integrate the information in a kiosk in the scene.

You may either IM Willow Shenlin the pics if you already have them in SL or email them to sabine@reljic.com
Cheers,
S-

In case of issues lining up the horizon across the pictures, here is Brian Nelson's recommendations:
1) Position a camera in the center of the area you want to show and enable it.
2) Select the camera properties
3) Set the field of view parameter to 90
4) Set the X, Y, and Z rotation coordinates to 0
5) Snap a screenshot
6) Change the Y rotation to 90 and take a shot
7) Change the Y rotation to 180 and take a shot
8) Change the Y rotation to 270 and take a shot
(Unity 3D platform)

When you take your pictures, be sure to remain static while rotating 4 times (facing north, east, south, west) for each horizon picture. Otherwise, the pictures don't follow each other as smoothly when I line them up in the cube.
Phase2: I 'll modify the scripts in the vignettes so that visitors will automatically get your abstract when they click to view your scene.
Phase3 will be me photoshopping your pics for a seamless scene.

The VRR is set up and open for anyone to visit. Click on the teleporter sitting next to the tp map in the Tiki Hut (SL location) and "energize". There are currently 2 panels with several scenes to choose from. I will shortly start modifying the panels to add submissions related to the Virtual Worlds project.

HI Willow would you be interested in Stagecoach Island? A VR which focuses on personal finance?

Hi Willow, I posted some shots of the Arvel site in Reaction Grid on the Open Sim platform. If you can narrow it down for your purposes great--if not let me know which ones you want and i'll send them by email. I'll get a note card off to you soonas an abstract.

If anyone has a project they would like to try in OpenSim on the Reactiongrid let me know. We are interested in ecoliteracy and constructivist and post constructivist learning strategies using virtual worlds.

Regards,
Pausanius
